Abstract

894,002. Educational appliances. VAN BAERLE, F.C.G. June 27, 1960 [June 26, 1959], No. 22460/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 146(2) In a nuclear reactor simulator, a transistor is heated from an external, controlled source. The transistor leakage current increases exponentially with temperature and is dependent on collector dissipation, itself dependent on leakage current. For a leakage current exceeding a given level the collector dissipation is such as to raise the leakage current above the stability valve and the current rises rapidly in a manner analogous to a reactor reaction which proceeds beyond criticality. The leakage current is assumed to be a measure of the nuclear reactivity of a reactor that is, its neutron flux density or generated power. The heating supplied to the transistor is manually controlled by means of switches and resistors and adjustment of these simultaneously positions the control and safety rods of a model pile. Visible and audible warning devices are also operated when the safety rods are moved into the model.
