Abstract

845,207. Control of several A.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. April 1, 1958 [April 2, 1957], No. 10748/57. Class 38 (3). [Also in Group XL (a)] Control rods in a nuclear reactor are adjustable along vertical paths extending parallel to each other and arranged in groups forming concentric loops, the groups being raised successively starting with the outermost group and working inwards. Each rod is moved by a motor PM the motors raising the rods of the first group being coupled together and fed by switches R1. A four-position switch CSWO controls the raising and lowering. When this switch is moved to the US (up slow) position a clutch USC causes a transmitter coil R to be driven by a continuously rotating motor DM so that the motor PM is driven by pulses from coils XO, YO through rectifiers and the switches R1. On reaching the limit of travel of the rods of the first group a limit switch LS2 is closed and a cam controller CCO changes the switches so that motors of the third group are next energized. Clutches DSC, DFC provide for lowering slow or fast. When lowering the limit switches LS1 operate the cam controller CCO to change from, for example, group 7 to group 5. The apparatus illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 applies only to the odd groups of control rods, the even groups being started when the previous odd group is half-way through its travel.
