Abstract
836,356. Batch mixing-machines. BRI-. TISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Jan. 10, 1957 [Dec. 13, 1955]. No. 35767/55. Class 86 [Also in Group XXXV] An apparatus for stirring molten metal in a container 7, Fig. 1, comprises two or more electromagnets situated adjacent the container so as to produce a magnetic flux therein, together with means for applying pulses of unidirectional current sequentially to the windings 1, 2, 3 of the electromagnets whereby a travelling magnetic field is produced in the metal. The means for applying the pulses to the winding 1 is shown in Fig. 2 and is the same for the windings 2, 3. The winding 1 is supplied from a rectifier 12 fed with A.C. through a saturable reactor 13. A control winding 14 on the reactor is supplied from a rectifier 15 fed from the same A.C. source under control of a switch 16. When the switch 16 is closed the reactor is saturated and of low impedence and thus the winding 1 is excited. The switches 16 of the windings 1, 2, 3 are operated in sequence by a rotary cam. In another embodiment the electromagnets each have two windings whereby the magnetic flux may be reversed. The windings of each electromagnet are either oppositely wound or wound in the same direction and fed with reversed currents. The pulses may be arranged to overlap.
