Abstract

N1-substituted N-aryl ureas are prepared by reacting carbon monoxide with a mixture of a primary or a secondary amine (or both) and an aromatic nitro compound in the liquid state in the presence of a copper compound. Suitable amines are dimethylamine, cyclohexylamine, pyrrolidine, piperidine and morpholine, nitrobenzene is preferred as the aromatic nitro compound, and specified copper compounds are the salts such as chloride, bromide, nitrate, sulphate and acetate, and cupric oxide and hydroxide when conditions are such that they form complexes with the amine used. Symmetrical ureas are obtained as by-products. In an example, piperidine and nitrobenzene are reacted with CO in the presence of CuCl2-2H2O to produce N1-pentamethylene-N-phenyl-urea and N,N1-bis-pentamethylene-urea. Other specified products are anilino piperidino carbonyl, 4-chloroanilino piperidino carbonyl, 2-methyl-4-chloroanilino piperidino carbonyl, and 4-chloroanilino morpholino carbonyl.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise the usual carriers, and as active ingredient an N1-substituted N-aryl urea with or without a corresponding symmetrical urea (see Group IV (b)).
