1421600 Aromatic diamines and aromatic nitro compounds SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 22 June 1973 [23 June 1972 (5) 27 June 1972 1 July 1972 13 Feb 1973] 29902/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds having the general formula wherein A is -O-R 2 or -NR 3 R 9 in which R 2 is C 2 to C 6 alkyl or aralkyl and R 3 and R 9 are each hydrogen or a C 1 to C 6 alkyl optionally substituted by hydroxy, alkoxy or sulphonylamido; R 1 is C 1 to C 6 alkyl; and X is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, alkyl or alkoxy. The invention further comprises a process for the preparation of a diamine having the formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or C 1 to C 6 alkyl; R 4 and R 5 are C 1 to C 6 alkyl optionally substituted by hydroxy, alkoxy or sulphonyl-amido; and X is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, alkyl or alkoxy, comprising the reduction of a compound of the formula Compounds of Formula II may be prepared by alkylating a compound of the formula (which may be prepared by reacting a compound of formula with ammonia or a primary amine) by reacting a compound of the Formula IV with a secondary amine or, when R 5 is a beta-alkyl sulphonylamidoethyl group, by reacting a compound of the formula where Z is an alkyl sulphonyl group with ethanolamine. The compounds of Formula IV may be prepared by reacting a compound of the formula with a compound of the formula R 2 -Cl
