Abstract

875,843. Pouring spouts ; stoppers. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Jan. 11, 1960 [April 6, 1959], No. 11592/59. Classes 66 and 125(3). A pouring spout for an oil can or drum is combined with a stopper and comprises a lip 1 and neck 2 moulded integrally from a plastics material, e.g. polyethylene. A portion 3 of the neck 2 seals against a tubular opening in a container while allowing rotation of the spout, a step 4 on the neck preventing axial movement of the spout upwards. The lip 1 has sides 6, a convex pouring surface 9 and a sloping surface 10 which forms an obtuse angle with the surface 9 to prevent drips. The stopper 6, which may be a tinplate pressing, or of a rigid thermoplastic material, has lateral projections 12, or alternatively an annular projection, fitting under a ledge 11 on the inner wall of the neck 2, but the stopper may be levered out in order to pour from the spout. A rupturable diaphragm 15 extends across the neck 2 below the stopper. In a modification, Figs. 7-11 (not shown), the stopper is held by an inward flange at the upper end of the neck, and the diaphragm is placed above the lower end of the neck. When in position the stopper presses the wall of the neck 2 outwards against the tubular opening in the container to increase the seal formed between these members.
