A method of increasing the life of the lining of a tiltable vessel used in the manufacture of steel by surface blowing comprises rotating the vessel about its longitudinal axis at intervals when heating is not in progress. As shown, a vessel 1 is supported on a trunnion ring 4 by claws 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, 3, 3<SP>1</SP> having flanges 2a, 2<SP>1</SP>a: 3a, 3<SP>1</SP>a; the upper claws 2, 3 resting on the trunnion ring and a space 5 being provided between the lower claws and the trunnion ring, the space being closed by locking means, e.g. wedges, during working of the vessel. A wheeled carriage 15 having a hydraulic lifting jack 7 and means 9 for rotation of the jack may be placed beneath the vessel, the wedges between the lower claws and the trunnion ring removed, and the vessel raised clear of the trunnion ring; the vessel may then be rotated through any desired angle e.g. 90 degrees and replaced on the trunnion ring. A cover 10 may be provided for the vessel, which cover is raised before rotating the vessel so that no rotary movement of the cover takes place.
