The boiler for use in a central heating system, which may comprise a rectangular vessel of square cross-section in three sides of which are provided sockets through which immersion heaters 2 are inserted, has each socket at different heights above its base. Two flanges 14, 15 at the top and bottom of the vessel are provided with apertures. In the former, apertures 5, 6 respectively provide outlets for heated water and an overspill and further apertures (not shown) house a thermometer, a thermostat and a safety valve. The flange 15 has an aperture connected to the inlet pipe which passes into pump 13. A terminal box 37 is provided. The boiler may be enclosed in a metal cover 16. As many as twelve 3 kw. heaters may be used at once, and the vessel may be cylindrical with sets of four heaters disposed along a symmetrical triad of generators each heater being a different height above the base than the others. The height of the vessel must be greater than its width and a preferred ratio is 3:1, the tank having a preferred capacity of 2 0 gallons. The three sets of heating elements 20, 21, 22, Fig. 6, are arranged in parallel across a three phase supply S each set, which also has an indicator lamp 36 in parallel with it, has a control switch 24, 25 or 26 and a circuit breaker 28, 29 29<SP>1</SP> in series with. The circuit also includes a contractor coil 30, a master thermostat 32, a room thermostat 33 and a time switch 31.
