Abstract

875,595. Automatic current-control systems. ETHER LANGHAM THOMPSON Ltd. July 24, 1959 [Aug. 7, 1958]. No. 25326/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (4). The current density in an electroplating bath is maintained constant by controlling a variableratio transformer, supplying the bath through a rectifier, by a controller responsive to the voltage between an immersed metallic detector plate having its edges masked from electrodeposition and a cathode of the bath. The controller comprises a galvanometer having a pointer carrying a pair of vanes arranged to allow a light beam to render conductive one of a pair of photo-transistors when the detector-plate voltage varies. The current through the conductive photo-transistor actuates a relay controlling the direction of rotation of a reversible motor driving a slider of the variable-ratio transformer so as to restore the detector-plate voltage to a predetermined value and maintain the current density constant. In a modification, a single vane varies the conduction of a photo-transistor to control the plating current through an electronic or magnetic amplifier. The detector plate is mounted in a plastic frame covering one face and the edges of the plate. Specification 817,053 is referred to.
