Abstract
875,497. Eddy current couplings. COHEN, E., and ROTH, S. Jan. 15, 1960 [Jan. 23, 1959], No. 1533/60. Class 35. An air-cooled eddy-current coupling includes a stator comprising two portions 1a, 1b with a field coil 2, surrounding a first armature 9 rigidly attached to driving shaft 7 and a second armature 10 rigidly attached to driven shaft 8. Armature 9 is formed with teeth and slots on its outer periphery and is reduced in thickness near the centre 14 to reduce leakage flux in this region. Armature 8 has a smooth outer periphery and the portion between the hub and outer periphery is divided into radial fins and slots 15 to allow passage of cooling air. Also mounted on shaft 8 is a fan 16 which draws air through the machine from an inlet in end-flange 3 to outlet 19 in the stator. Armature 9 is also provided with fins 20 to mix the hot and cooler air, and it is supported at both ends by ball bearings 11, 13. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the fins on the inner armature project laterally beyond the outer peripheral portion of the armature and act as fan blades. Holes are formed in each end flange of the machine as well as in each end of the stator and outer armature so that both axial and radial air streams flow through the machine.
