In an expanding-pulley drive relative axial movement of the pulley discs due to belt lengthening or pulley wear closes an electric contact to operate a visual or audible indicator and/or an electric motor to separate the driving and driven pulleys. The vehicle transmission shown comprises driving and driven pulleys 2, 3, the former of which is mounted on a distribution box 9 and consists of fixed and movable discs 15, 16 which, upon their distance apart falling to a predetermined value, causes a stud 19 to close electric contacts 21, 25. This operates either an indicator 29 or an electric motor 31 which rotates a screwed spindle 10, 11 moving the box 9 to increase the distance between the pulleys 2, 3. Rotation of the spindle may be effected manually by a handle 14.
