Abstract

874,998. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Jan. 21, 1960 [Jan. 23, 1959], No. 2502/59. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake comprising angularly moving pressure plates 12 pivotally secured at 15 to a non-rotatable support 1 and having a pad of friction material 13 pivotally secured to each pressure plate 12 to frictionally engage a rotatable disc 2, means (7) is provided to effect frictional engagement and resilient and deformable members 17 comprising initially straight metal wires or rods which engage at each end with anchor pins 16 and pivots 15 of fixed support 1 and which engage between their ends with angularly movable pressure plates 12, the members 17 being deformed by angular movement of the pressure plates 12 towards the disc on application of the brake and being sufficiently resilient to separate the friction pads from the disc when the brake is disengaged. As the brake pads gradually wear during service the pressure plates gradually advance towards the disc and application of the brake thus progressively deforms the resilient wire members 17 as angular movement of the pressure plates gradually increases at every brake application. The inherent resilience of the resilient wire members is sufficient to retract the brake pressure plates a predetermined distance away from the disc when the braking pressure is removed, irrespective of wear of the pads. When fresh pad assemblies are assembled to the brake to replace worn pad assemblies the members may be straightened for re-use or may be simply replaced.
