Abstract

In the manufacture of polyalkylene terephthalates by effecting ester-interchange between a dialkyl terephthalate and a glycol containing 2-10 carbon atoms and polymerizing the resulting glycol terephthalate, polyesters of improved colour are obtained by effecting both the esterinterchange and the polymerization reaction in the presence of a divalent metal antimonite, e.g. cadmium, tin, magnesium, manganese, lead, beryllium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc, mercury, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper or chromium antimonites. The ester-interchange reaction may also be effected in the presence of an additional catalyst (e.g. manganese acetate, magnesium acetate, calcium acetate or barium acetate), or a colour inhibitor (e.g. triphenyl phosphite). The dialkyl terephthalate may be partly replaced by a dialkyl orthophthalate or isophthalate. Examples describe the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol. Specification 740,381 is referred to.
