Abstract

874,215. Spark apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 22, 1959 [Oct. 24, 1958], No. 35809/59. Class 39(1). A protective spark gap for an electrical circuit comprises two electrodes 11, 14 presenting curved surfaces 12, 13 towards each other, has an inert ionizable gas filling of e.g. argon or helium at a pressure of 0.01 to 2500 mm. Hg., and has a source of radioactivity for ionizing the gas at a level below that obtaining upon breakdown of the gap. The source of radioactivity may be an annular strip 23 of Nickel-63, Nickel-63 and Cobalt-60 or Nickel-63 plated on copper, or the radioactivity may be provided by the addition to the filling of a radioactive gas e.g. Krypton-85. The Krypton-85 is also stated to be effective in inhibiting anchoring of the arc. The upper electrode 11 is supported by a rod 8 passing through an insulator 3. The cap 5 is bonded to the insulator by means of a ceramic-tometal bond 6 and the cap 5 places the seal in compression. The similar seal 17 between the insulator and the casing 15 is also maintained in a state of compression. The exhaust and gas introducing tube 20 has a protective cap 21 containing a quantity of soft solder.
