A cord switch adapted to be connected in the flexible lead to an electrical appliance comprises spaced-apart edgealigned contact plates and a sliding member carrying a spring-loaded contact which in the " On " position bridges the space between the contact plates and in the " Off " position lies adjacent one of the plates. As shown, the movable contact comprises a roller 17 resting in a shaped recess in a slider 13 operated from outside the casing 10 by a suitable projection. The fixed contact plates 21, 22 rest on a ledge 20 in the recess 12 in which the slider 13 moves, being separated by projections 23, and are retained by a coverplate 25 riveted to the casing 10. The roller 17 is pressed upwards by a spring 19 engaging a waist portion 18 and in the " On " position bridges the gap between the contact plates 21, 22, whilst in the " Off " position it rests in a slot 24 in one plate 21. Terminal screws 31 are inserted in the contact plates 21, 22 through the cover-plate 25 which also serves to retain nuts 33 in housings 34 whereby the switch cover 11 is retained in place by screws 35. Only one conductor is severed and connected to the terminals 31, the other being anchored to posts 28 as described and claimed in Specification 874,054, the posts also serving to locate the coverplate 25.
