Abstract

Artificial adsorbent zeolites are prepared by calcining a natural hydrated aluminium silicate to remove the majority of the water of hydration without modifying its physical structure, pulverizing it and then reacting it with an alkali metal or p alkaline earth metal hydroxide in aqueous medium at 70 DEG to 103 DEG C. When an alkali metal silico-aluminate is prepared it may be converted to another silico-aluminate by base-exchange. In examples kaolin is calcined at 700 DEG C., ground, and heated with 1 N to 4 N sodium hydroxide solution at 80 DEG to 95 DEG C. for 8 hours to obtain sodium silico-aluminate which is heated at 450 DEG C. to obtain material having pore diameters of 4 to 4.5 ; the sodium silico-aluminate is reacted with calcium nitrate solution to obtain calcium silico-aluminate of pore diameter about 5 , which is activated by heating at 450 DEG C.; the calcium silico-aluminate is mixed with calcium bentonite, carboxymethyl cellulose and water, to form a mass which is extruded into rods which are dried and activated at 450 DEG C.
