Abstract
873,293. Packaging machines. ARENCO Ltd., and LLOYD, E. J. March 3, 1960 [Feb. 25, 1959], No. 6599/59. Class 94(1). A machine for packing material in bags comprises a pair of arms 10, 11 slidably but non-rotatably mounted on a shaft 14, suction means 15 facing each other on the arms for gripping opposite faces of a bag, a pair of cams 25, 26 engaging the arms or parts attached thereto to cause the arms to slide on the shaft as it turns, and springs 22, 23 for keeping the arms or the parts attached thereto in contact with the cams 25, 26, the arrangement being such that the suction means 15 grip an unopened bag in one angular position of the shaft and are moved apart as it is turned to another position to hold the bag open to receive the material. The arms 10, 11 are mounted on blocks 12, 13 respectively slidable on the shaft 14. Cam rollers 27 on the arms 10, 11 and cam rollers 28 on the blocks 12, 13 engage the cams 25, 26 respectively. An unopened bag 16 fed from a stack by a suction gripper is gripped by the suction cups 15. As the shaft 14 rotates the rollers 27, 28 are forced apart by the cams 25, 26 to move the arms 10, 11 apart to open the bag and put it on the filling nozzle 18 having members 19, 20 pivoted at 21 so that they can be swung apart to grip the mouth of the opened bag 17. A projection 32, Fig. 4, on the block 13 slides in a slot 31 on a member 30 pivoted to the block 12 and urged anti-clockwise by a spring 34. As the blocks 12, 13 move apart, a shoulder 33 engages the projection 32. After the suction has been released the latch holds the arms 10, 11 apart so that they clear the bag 17 on the nozzle 18 as they return to their lowest position. As the arms approach this position the member 30 abuts against a fixed pin 36, Fig. 5 (not shown), to release the latch. The cams 25, 26 may be interchangeable for different sizes of bag.
