[Class 94 (i)] A device for feeding bellows-sided paper bags to a filling machine, and for expanding them, comprises means for separating two oppositelydisposed members which grip the sides of a bag at its mouth, and means for inserting the sides of the bag in the gripping-members. The bags A, Fig. 1, each have a thumb notch B formed in one wall at the mouth. The flattened bags are delivered one at a time by a chain conveyer 3, Figs. 1 and 3, ,between rolls 6, 7 which crease the bags along the lines of final folding. Each bag comes to rest on a table 8, whence it is taken by a suction head 10 and transferred to a turret 11 which is rotated step-by-step by a Geneva gear 62, 63. The turret is provided with four sets of grippers, each of which consists of a fixed jaw 31, Figs. 3 and 9, and a jaw 32 that is moved radially along.slide rails 45 by a fixed cam as the turret rotates. The jaws 31, 32 are provided with spring-operated clamps 47, 48 respectively, and these clamps are moved away from the jaws by arms 51, 52 on a reciprocating rod 50 when a bag is to be inserted. In use, the suction head 10 grips a bag on the table 8 and swings it into the vertical position, the notch B allowing one side of the bag to pass the jaws 31, 32 while the other side is stopped by the jaws, thus opening the bag slightly as shown in Fig. 9. The head 10 is then raised by an oscillating lever 59 and lifts the bag so that the sides are gripped between the jaws and the clamping plates 47, 48. The head 10 then releases-the bag and moves backwards, and the movement of the turret carries the bag to the next station, the jaw 32 being drawn backwards during the movement to open the bag fully. As soon as the bag comes to rest, a plunger 67, Fig. 3, descends into the bag and expands the lower part. Subsequent movements of the turret carry the bag to a position below a filling- nozzle 71. Finally, the clamps 31, 32 are opened, by a rod similar to the rod 50, to release the filled bag and allow it to drop on to a conveyer 12.
