A conveyer for forcing downwards material of an abrasive nature consists of a number of segments 11 fast on a driven shaft 10, each segment being provided with a radial abutment 14 on its leading edge, a similar but oppositely projecting abutment 13 on its trailing edge and an arcuate abutment 15 projecting downwards from its periphery. A protective layer of material is deposited on the underface of each segment between the abutments 13, 15.
