Abstract
872,581. Deep drawing; spinning; extruding. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 13, 1959 [Nov. 28, 1958], No. 38442/58. Class 83 (4). A process for pressing or forming sheet metals, e.g. steel, aluminium, copper or brass, comprises applying to the metals when in sheet form a coating composition consisting of solutions in an organic solvent of a copolymer of an acrylic or methacrylic ester with a minor amount of a carboxylic acid containing an ethylenically unsaturated linkage removing the solvent therefrom and thereafter converting the coated sheet metal into a shaped object by pressing or forming, e.g. deep drawing, spinning or impact extrusion. The composition may include an organic solvent-soluble alkylated heat-hardenable condensation product of formaldehyde with urea or melamine and/or a mineral lubricant such as graphite ormolybdenum disulphide and/or an oily or waxy lubricant. The coating composition is, in one example, employed in the form of a solution in trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, perchloro ethylene or methylene dichloride. The methacrylate ester copolymer is a copolymer of n-butyl methacrylate with minor proportions of methyl methacrylate and n-butyl methacrylate. Synthetic lubricants such as chlorinated hydrocarbons and synthetic polymeric esters may be used. A coating composition for steel comprises by weight 50-98% acrylic or methacrylic copolymer, 1-20% thermo-hardening resin and 1-35% lubricants. The composition is applied by dipping, brushing or spraying and the chlorinated. solvent is removed by evaporation leaving a strongly adherent protective film.
