Abstract

872,579. Electron beam apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 1, 1959 [Oct. 15, 1958], No. 32940/58. Class 39(1). An electron gun for large beam currents, e.g. in the production of focused beams for localised heating of a bombarded object, comprises a filamentary cathode 4 extending longtudinally within a slit 3 in a metal member 2 and adjustable bodily transversely of the plane of the slit to control the magnitude of the electron emission. The cathode 4 is detachably secured between two posts 5 and 6 which are slidable in holes provided in a block 1. The posts are moved axially by rotation of an insulated screw 12 which is threaded through a cross-head 11. The space above the insulating rings 7 and 8 may be oil-filled. More than one gun may be provided, each cathode wire being separately adjustable.
