Abstract
In a method of treating a metal (e.g. iron) which is susceptible to corrosion to render it corrosion resistant, the metal is heated and vibrated to remove occluded gases from its pores and interstices, the thus heated metal is subjected to a gaseous heat-decomposable metal compound at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of said compound to impregnate said pores and interstices with the compound, the metal component of said compound having a greater resistance to corrosion than the metal being treated, and the resultant gas-impregnated metal is heated to cause decomposition of the compound and deposition of the corrosion-resistant metal in said pores and interstices. The metal is preferably subjected to sub-atmospheric pressure while it is being heated and vibrated. Vibration may be effected mechanically or by using pulsating electromagnets. The temperature of the base metal may be increased after deposition of the corrosion-resistant metal to accelerate diffusion of the latter. Suitable corrosion-resistant metals are chromium, copper, nickel, titanium, zinc and zirconium. They may be deposited from such compounds as carbonyls, nitrocyl carbonyls, carbonyl halides, hydrides, nitrides, nitroxyls, alkyls and halides. The compounds may be entrained in a carrier gas such as carbon dioxide, helium, nitrogen or hydrogen.
