872,003. Drying fabric or like webs. TIMSON, E. A. June 25, 1959 [June 30, 1958], No. 20880/58. Class 34(1) Textile or paper webs are dried by rotatable and fixed burners 1, 3 respectively which operate independently of each other but in predetermined sequence related to the speed of relative travel between the webs and the burners by solenoid operated gas valves 5, 6 and switches 8, 9 activated by cams 13, 14 mounted on a shaft 16, which shaft is timed by a timer T synchronized with the speed control mechanism of an electric motor driving the webs. The burner 1 above the web is pivotally turnable about its longitudinal axis a by an air cylinder and piston device 10 which is controlled by a solenoid operated spring return air valve 11 timed from the timer T by a cam-actuated switch. 12. The sequence dictated by the timer T as the speed of the webs increases comprises opening the valve 5 to the burner 1 which at the rest position has its nozzle directed away from the webs, operating the valve 11 to rotate the burner towards the web and opening the valve 6 to the burner 3. The reverse sequence takes place on a slow-down of the electric motor. Further burners may be utilized as shown in dotted outline which are operated and controlled in a manner similar to the burner 1. Specification 872,004 is referred to.
