816,637. Control systems for heating resistances. PROCTOR ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 14, 1956 [Dec. 22, 1955], No. 38207/56. Class 38 (4). A control system for an electric heating unit having at least two heater elements comprises a switch whereby a single actuating member serves to effect either energization of a single one of the heater elements or the energization of two elements in parallel and also to adjust the ratio between the energization and de - energization times of the heater elements. An electric heating device 10 comprises two heater elements 13, 14 connectable to a mains supply 11, 12 by means of a switch 15 having an actuating knob 16. The switch 15 has four cam members, cam 19 operating a main ON-OFF switch 18, cam 23 effects the energization of a single or the parallel connected elements, cam 26 adjusts the ratio of the closed and open times of a cycling switch 25 whilst the indent cam 35 serves as a positioning member for certain positions of the knob 16. Movement of the knob 16 to effect clockwise movement of the cams closes the switch 18, the cam 26 gradually increasing the contact pressure of the switch 25 by the rise of the cam 26 from O to A, thereby increasing the energization of the heater element 13. During this part of the movement the heater element 14 is out of circuit since the cam 23 has not yet closed switch 22. Further clockwise movement of the actuating knob 16 causes the cam 23 to close the switch 22 to put the two heater elements 13, 14 in parallel and to bring a differently calibrated part of the cam 26 into association with the cycling switch 25 so that the contact pressure of the switch 25 is governed differently for the two elements 13, 14 in parallel than for the element 13 alone. The indents 36 on the cam 35 correspond to set control positions such as " SIM," " LO," "MED," " HI " whilst the projection 37 thereon ensures that, when the element 14 is switched in, the operative point on the cam 26 must move from A to B. In a further embodiment the control knob is movable in either direction from a central " OFF " position when it is desired to use either one or the two elements. U.S.A.
