A beet-harvester of the type in which pairs of wheels 23, 24 in V-formation co-operate to lift the crop from the ground is characterised in that the lifted beets are removed from the wheels by flails 41 mounted on an axis above and behind the wheels and are directed on to a cleaning device 61 arranged transversely behind the wheels, a vertical grating 71 being placed on the far side of the cleaning device to deflect the beets on to the device and to break up clods. The main frame 10 of the machine is supported on rear casters 15, 16 and forwardly on a pivoted drawframe 20 which is rigidly connected to a tractor, the working height of the front of the frame 10 being adjustable by a hydraulic ram 102, Fig. 4, between the frame 10 and drawframe 20. The lifting wheels are non-driven' and have lugs 29 'around tapered rims 29. The flails are flat flexible strips 43 with diagonal ribs 44 on their faces and are pivoted on cross-shafts 40 carried by spaced discs 39 on a shaft 34. The grating 7 comprises a rod 72 with pendant bars 73, one of the bars 79 being extended rearwardly and spring-loaded at 80 to maintain the grating vertical. In. a modification, Figs. 13-15 (not shown), the grating is constantly oscillated by an eccentric driven from the main power-shaft 53. The cleaning device comprises a series of parallel, driven, shafts 59, 62 carrying intermeshing toothed discs 65, the discs being mounted on squared tubing 58a, Fig. 16, surrounding the shafts and being spaced by rubber collars 58c permitting lateral deflection to accommodate stones. The crop is fed laterally by the cleaning device to an elevator 67.
