Abstract

The invention comprises dyes, free of COOH or SO3H groups, of formula OHC-A-N= N-B-N=N-C-X where a is a benzene or naphthalene residue which may be substituted, B is a benzene or naphthalene residue, C is a benzene or heterocyclic residue, B and C may contain alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxy or halogen groups, and X is a hydroxy or amino group. The dyes are prepared in conventional fashion A-->B-->C. The dyes colour synthetic fibres, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide and acetate rayon fibres. The dyes are applied in finely divided form in the presence of dispersing agents and at elevated temperatures. The use of swelling agents for the fibres may be advantageous. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring processes representative of A components used are 4-aminobenzaldehyde, 2-chloro- 5-aminobenzaldehyde and 2-methyl- 4-aminobenzaldehyde, of B components used are aniline and its 3-methyl, -hydroxy- and -cyano-methyl and hydroxyethoxy- and 3, 6-dimethoxy derivatives and a -naphthylamine and of C components used are phenol and its 2-chloro, 3-methyl and cyanomethyl and 2, 4-dichloro derivatives, resorcinol, 3-methyl-aniline, barbituric acid and 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone. Red, orange and brown shades are obtained.
