In a stabilizing apparatus for damping the rolling motion of ships, in which a stabilizing mass is constituted by a travelling truck 3 carried on supporting rails 2 and movable by a driving device along toothed racks, two toothed racks 20 are arranged athwartships and co-operate with at least one driving gear wheel 25, the travelling truck having ports extending downwardly below the horizontal plane of engagement of the driving gear wheels 25 and racks 20 for the purpose of lowering the centre of gravity S of the truck.
