In a chair in which a rigidly interconnected seat and back rest is supported between two side frames solely by pins or rollers on one member engaging grooves or tracks on the other, the displacement of the seat member is arranged to bring a pivoted foot-rest from underneath the seat into an operative position. Preferably, slots 8, 8a are so tilted that the descent of the centre of gravity of the occupied seat member as it moves to the rearward position is sufficient to counterbalance the leverage of the loaded footrest 10 operated by cords 12. The curvature of the slots 8, 8a ensures that the centre of gravity, after rising, also falls again slightly as the chair returns to the forward position (Fig. 1, not shown). The foot-rest is urged clockwise about pivot 11 by a spring attached to cross-bar 13.
