870,970. Cleaning metals. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Oct. 28, 1959, No. 36674/59. Class 82(2) A method of cleaning articles in a diphase bath consisting of a lower solvent phase denser than water and water, at a temperature below the boiling point of the water solvent azeotrope, comprises successively moving them through the water into the solvent phase through which they are conveyed in counter current to the flow of solvent and removing them through the water phase, the flows of water and solvent being maintained constant and separate. As shown, articles 25 on the conveyer 23 are moved through water layer 20 into solvent layer 22 which may be trichloroethylene, methyl chloride, or perchloroethylene or mixtures of these solvents with benzine or naphtha. Cleaned articles are sprayed at 13 and surplus water flows over wier, 30 into solvent trap 16 and filter 17. Solvent enters at 12, is heated by coils 28, and leaves at 14, a portion of the recycled solvent being continuously purified. In a modification (Fig. 4 not shown) the water flows in the reverse direction to the solvent.
