Abstract

870,902. Drills and cutters. NORFOLK PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Dec. 18, 1959, No. 43102/59. Class 83 (3). A boring-tool for cutting an annulus around a hole in a fibrous material e.g. wood, to prevent splitting of the wood during the insertion of a wood screw, comprises a body 35, Figs. 4, 5, having a segmental cutting edge 37 forming faces 40, 41 and a face 39, for limiting the depth of cut. A drill 28 having a barb 92 for removal of the cuttings, drills a hole in the wood for the screw, and the cutting edge 37 cuts the annulus. If pressure is applied to the tool, the material is compressed except in the space 36, and the face 40 or 41 removes the material on rotation of the tool. The cutting edge may have a number of spaces 36, and may be modified to include two cutting edges 82, 83, Fig. 14.
