Abstract
870,767. Making electric contacts. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT. Feb. 11, 1959, No. 4817/59. Class 83 (2). In the manufacture of solderable electriccontact elements of silver-cadmium oxide by oxidation of the cadmium in a silver-cadmium alloy, those surfaces of the element which are subsequently to be soldered are protected against oxidation during the oxidation treatment. A moulded element of silver-cadmium is partially enclosed in a crucible of refractory material and is oxidized by calcining in air at 700-850 C. The surface of the element which projects into the crucible is protected from oxidation; an inert or reducing gas may be introduced into the crucible. Alternatively, the solderable surface of the element may be protected by a gas-tight layer of a ceramic material such as aluminium oxide applied by a flame-spraying process. In another embodiment two sheet-like elements of silver-cadmium alloy are superposed with their solderable surfaces in contact. These surfaces are sealed around the edges, for example, by welding, and the elements are then calcined in oxygen for 70 hours at 800 C. The two sheets are then separated.
