Abstract

870,612. Travelling-wave tube amplifying circuits. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. Oct. 24, 1957 [Oct. 26, 1956], No. 33214/57. Class 40(6) [Also in Group XL(a) ] The electron beam of a travelling-wave tube acting as a pulse amplifier is pulsed, the pulses having such a duration and spacing that when reflected waves arrive at the critical point of selfexcitation, i.e. the point at which the power of a portion of a wave which has been reflected at the output of the wave retarder and reflected again at a point on the wave retarder is equal to the power of the travelling wave moving in the same direction and required to be amplified by the tube, they do not interact with electrons, so the generation of self-excited oscillations is prevented and the need for high frequency attenuating means in the travelling-wave tube no longer exists. In the arrangement shown a stream of electrons from a cathode 14, Wehnelt cylinder 13 and control anode 12 is passed to a collector electrode 15 through a helix 10 having an input end E and an output end A. Pulses of the requisite duration and spacing are applied from a generator 16 to the control anode 12. High frequency oscillations are applied to a gating circuit 19 which is also connected to the output of the generator 16 so that the high frequency oscillations are applied to the input E in pulses synchronous with the pulses of electrons.
