Abstract
870,470. Reinforced flexible diaphragms. BURTONWOOD ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 19, 1959 [July 18, 1958], No. 23050/58. Class 140. A textile-reinforced diaphragm of dish shape of the type required to flex in opposite directions is made by winding a bias-cut cord material into a cylindrical form on a mandrel, binding a nylon cord or metal wire at the centre and pulling one half of the cylindrical fabric back over the other half, as shown in Fig. 4, where the warps of one layer lie across those in the other layer; then forming the doubled tube into a conical shape by displacing the tubular fabric over a conical shaped former brought up to the end of the mandrel, and finally providing the cone-shaped fabric on one or both faces with a layer or layers of rubber, or thermoplastic resin which is then vulcanized or cured. The product is shown in Fig. 1 in which the upper and lower layers of fabric are 5 and 6, folded around a metal ring 7. The fabric reinforcing layer strengthens the sharply radiused corners under the outer coating of rubber or plastic 2, 3, where stressing occurs. The cord material used may be of cotton or nylon in the form of side-by-side cords loosely bound together by a finer weft, and is friction calendered before use.
