Abstract

773,983. Flexible hoses; end fittings. MELSOM, W. A. and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. March 15, 1955 [March 15, 1954; April 7, 1954], Nos. 7522/54 and 10247/54. Classes 99(1) and 99(2) In a method of making a hose comprising a flexible tubular layer 6, Fig. 3 of metallic reinforcing material and a cover tube 7 of resilient material, the layer 6 is formed by braiding wires under tension directly upon a rigid mandrel. The inner tube 1, comprises inner and outer layers 2, 3 of rubber and, a flexible embedded single or multiply non-metallic layer or layers 4; the latter may be dispensed with and the inner tube may comprise a synthetic thermoplastic material examples of which are given. The outer tube 5 consists of one or more layers 6 of braided high-tensile steel-wires each layer of which may have in interposed layer of fabric with a covering 7 of rubber, thermoplastic material and/or a silicone material; where rubber is used the braiding wires are covered with an open mesh layer 8 of fabric such as cotton braid, the layers 6, 7 and 8 being slid over the inner tube after the rubber has been vulcanized. The wire braid is formed on the mandrel whilst the wires are under tension after which the fabric, when used, is braided round it, the covering material 7 being then extruded, cast and cured or otherwise applied thereon. The hose may have end fittings in which the wire braid is gripped between a shoulder 11, Fig. 4, and a sleeve 12 and the end of the inner tube 1. forms a lip 13 held in sealing engagement with the sleeve 12 by a tapering insert 14 forced into place by. screwing together clamping member 15, 16; member 15 transmits pressure to the insert 14 through a ring 17 to a part 18 abutting a collar 19. Specification 740,763 is referred to.
