Abstract

870,445. Slack-preventing. METROPOLITAN TOOL & PRODUCTS Ltd. Oct. 14, 1957 [Aug. 3, 1956], No. 23946/56. Class 78 (2). Electricity (or compressed air) is supplied underground to a coal-cutting machine by cable 11 wound on drum 5 driven through gear-box 3 by electric motor 1. The motor is driven continuously in one direction. It therefore winds in the cable as the machine advances towards drum 5 and, as the machine retreats away from drum 5, opposes the winding-off of the cable and so maintains the tension thereof, the slip taking place between the rotor and the starting coils of the motor. The motor 5 has high resistance and a large cover to help dissipate heat and may be cooled by a blower. Electricity (or air) is supplied to cable 11 through slip ring (or gland) 12. Driven screw 10 reciprocates element 9 to guide the cable on to the drum.
