Abstract
870,193. Non-reciprocal attenuators and phaseshifters. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO. Ltd. Aug. 24, 1959 [Nov. 21, 1958], No. 37623/58. Class 40(8) A non-reciprocal transmission element, e.g. an isolator or phase-shifter, comprises a transmission line of the type having flat strip conductors, elements of dielectric and ferrite material being inserted in the line with flat faces lying against the strips. As shown, Fig. 4, the transmission line comprises an inner strip conductor 11 arranged centrally within a hollow outer rectangular conductor 12. Arranged asymmetrically between the conductors is an elongated block 13 of dielectric material e.g. of alumina or magnesium titanate or of a ferrite which is non-magnetic at the operating temperature. The block 13 is provided with end pieces 13a for impedance-matching purposes. A further elongated block 14 of magnetic ferrite is arranged symmetrically between the conductors with one face in contact with the inner conductor 11 and another in contact with the dielectric block 13. A polarizing magnetic field is provided by a magnet 15 or by an electromagnet. The Specification also describes a known construction, Fig. 2, in which dielectric and ferrite blocks 3, 4 are arranged within a co-axial line 1, 2. The invention may also be applied to a three conductor ("sandwich") strip line.
