Abstract

Ethylene alone or with other olefinically unsaturated compounds is polymerized at 160 DEG to 250 DEG C. and at a pressure of from 15,000 to 100,000 pounds per square inch, in the presence of a catalyst mixture comprising from 20 to 500 mols of oxygen and from 1 to 100 mols of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide per million mols of ethylene or admixture thereof with unsaturated compounds. Other monomers specified are alkenes, vinyl esters, vinyl ether and acrylic acid and its esters. Polymerization may be effected in a continuously operated tubular reactor and chain transfer agents such as ketones, alcohols, alkanes, cycloalkanes and arylalkanes also may be present. In examples the ethylene used is first deoxygenated, and water is used to quench the discharge mixture from the reactor. The products find application in mouldings, extrusions, films, coatings and fibres.
