Abstract
870,042. Packaging-machines. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 16, 1959 [Dec. 16, 1958], No. 42744/59. Class 94(1). An apparatus for placing a stack of cards in a carton comprises means to support an opentopped carton in an inclined position and to introduce a vertical stack into it, the means for introducing the stack then being withdrawn so that the stack tilts into position in the carton. A series of carton supports 12 are arranged on an intermittently rotatable table 10. Cards S are stacked by means, not described, on a plate 38 which descends as the stack grows, until eventually the stack is supported on ears 50, 52 projecting from card locating rails 46, 48. The rails are mounted on a platform 44 carried on an arm 58 pivoted at 60. When a stack is complete the arm swings to carry the platform 44 and stack to a carton C at the loading station L. The rails and ears 50, 52 enter the carton, Fig. 5, and a cam 102 on the platform 44 raises arms 96 carrying a holding bar 98, which latter engages the rear of the stack. The bar is locked in position by a detent 106 and the platform 44 swings back. As the ears 50, 52 withdraw, the stack tilts to rest on the carton base. The detent 106 is lowered to permit the bar 98 to drop to its inoperative position.
