Abstract
869,773. Preparing oximes from nitro-cyclo alkanes, electrolytically. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 8,1960 [May 25, 1959], No. 17719/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. Nitro cyclo-alkanes are converted to oxirnes by cathodic reduction to form the hydroxylamine in the catholyte which is then circulated to the anode compartment of the same or another cell to form the oxime by oxidation. As the hydrogen requirement is twice that of the oxygen requirement, the anode compartment is divided with an electrode in each, the catholyte being then circulated through one in a continuous process. An apparatus is described comprising three cells each having a porous cylindrical pot surrounded by a cylindrical lead anode and a nickel rod cathode at the centre. The cells communicate in series through overflow pipes whereby the catholyte flows from cell A through cathode compartments of cells B and C and then into the anode compartment of cell A and then into those of cells B and C to a reservoir. In an example, a solution of nitrocyclohexane in ethanol containing a little H 2 So 4 flows through the cells at 17 to 25 C., and at an anode C.D. half that of the cathode. A little acid is added at intervals. The product is recovered by neutralizing, and distilling off the alcohol. German Specification 964,773 is referred to.
