Abstract

869,768. Batteries. CHLORIDE BAT. TERIES Ltd. Feb. 3, 1960 [Feb. 26, 1959], No. 6671/59. Class 53. A cell is provided with a filling orifice having a tube a depending to the normal level of the electrolyte. A separate gas exit c is closed by a ball d when the cell is being filled so that when the electrolyte reaches its normal level it rises in the tube a. The filling opening is then closed by a lid e which has a projection h which moves the ball to one side and opens the vent c. The liquid in the tube a then falls back into the cell which continues to be vented normally through the opening c. The lid may be provided with a tube i which enters the tube a to minimize ejection of electrolyte due to gassing or movement of the cell. A similar arrangement may be applied to each of the cells in a battery which is provided with a common lid having projections h corresponding to the number . of cells. In a modification the lid is made in two parts which are slid apart when the cells are to be filled, half the balls moving in one direction to cover the vent holes, and half moving in the opposite direction.
