Abstract
869,506. Electric motors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 19, 1959 [March 24, 1958], No. 9531/59. Class 35. [Also in Group XXVI] In an electric motor pump unit 20 comprising a pump section 24 operable at a high temperature and axially spaced from a motor section 22 to be maintained at a lower temperature, a thermal barrier structure is inserted between generally radially-extending surfaces of the sections and includes a tubular supporting member 82 and a plurality of second supporting members 92 spaced radially outwardly of the first member 82 and circumferentially from each other, the members 82, 92 extending generally transversely of the surfaces, to which their ends are joined, and supporting one of the sections 22, 24 relative to the other. The members 92 are formed by slots 90 in a tubular member 88 and flex to permit differential expansion between the sections. The barrier also includes polished stainless steel discs 104, 106 spaced apart to define respectively upper spaces 114 through which air may freely circulate via the slots 90 and lower spaces 116, containing relatively stagnant air. The motor section 22 comprises a casing 30 which, if the material being pumped is hazardous or liquid metal, is hermetically sealed to mounting flanges 50, 52 by sealing containers such as disclosed in Specification 765,040, and a stator 28 hermetically sealed by a stator can 42 from a rotor 26 mounted on a shaft 32 which supports the pump impeller 34 and is carried by a thrust bearing 39 and sleeve-type bearings 38 similar to those disclosed in Specification 831,320. The rotor is immersed in and the bearings are lubricated by the hot liquid metal being pumped the flow of such metal being limited by labyrinthine seals 44, 46.
