[Also in Group XXII] An hydraulic mechanism for use with diecasting machinery comprises a differential or double-diameter piston b, b<SP>1</SP> working in a differential or double-diameter cylinder a, a<SP>1</SP> which has a passage c with a non-return valve c<SP>1</SP> leading from a fluid-pressure supply to the major diameter b of the piston to eliminate " snatch " during the forward stroke of the piston, and a further passage d connecting the major cylinder dimension with the minor one so that fluid is compressed to form a cushion slowly released by the further passage during the return-stroke of the piston. Fluid pressure is supplied through a port a<SP>3</SP> to move the piston through its forward stroke, the fluid also passing through the non-return valve c<SP>1</SP> to the portion b of the piston. On the return stroke fluid is compressed by the portion b and passes through the passage d, a screw d<SP>1</SP> being provided to vary the resistance of the passage.
