Abstract

Modified copolymers are prepared by forming a copolymer of a non-carboxylic vinyl compound or mixture of such compounds with a minor proportion of an a -, b -unsaturated carboxylic acid and reacting this copolymer with a polyfunctional alcohol or a mixture of polyfunctional alcohols which is or are partially esterified with unsaturated fatty acid, or with a mixture of unsaturated fatty acid and polyfunctional carboxylic acid or its anhydride. The non-carboxylic vinyl compound may be methyl methacrylate, styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl acetate, methyl or ethyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, and the unsaturated carboxylic acid may be acrylic or methacrylic acid. The polyfunctional alcohol may be glycerol, pentaerythritol, ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol, and the partial ester may be prepared by heating such alcohol with linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil, wood oil or oiticica oil, either alone or with phthalic, isophthalic or adipic acid or anhydride. The excess hydroxyl group content of the modified copolymers may be utilized in a cross-linking reaction with a urea or melamine formaldehyde resin, particularly a butylated urea or melamine formaldehyde resin, particularly in the production of stoving finishes.
