Class 112 A thread tensioning device in a sewing machine comprises a screw-threaded arbor 3 fixed in the frame 1 of the machine and having a head 9 at its free end, a finger-operable tension-adjusting nut 10 screwed on the arbor, co-operating tension discs 20 located on the arbor adjacent the head, a spring 24 interposed between the nut and the discs to bias the latter together, a tensionrelease element 21 interposed between the spring and discs, and a lever 27 operable to move the element 21 lengthwise of the arbor for compressing the spring to release the thread tension. The arbor is fixed in a wall 4 at the open top of the frame 1. The top is closed by a removable cover 2 formed with an opening 11 through which the upper part of the adjusting nut projects. The inner end of spring 24 bears against a disc 12 slidably but non-rotatably mounted on the arbor. A disc 17, interposed between disc 12 and nut 10 is releasably secured to the latter by a pin-and-hole connection to permit of relative angular adjustment between nut 10 and disc 17. Radial lugs on the respective discs 12 and 17 co-operate to limit turning of nut 10 to one revolution. The element 21, which is cupshaped, has an outwardly flanged rim 26, and its side portion co-operates with a sleeve portion 16 integral with disc 17 to close the opening 11 in front of nut 10. A non-rotatable disc 35, biased against the rear face of nut 10 by a spring 38, has a flange 36 which closes the opening 11 behind nut 10. A double-armed lever 27 has a forked arm 27 which embraces the cup 21 and is biased away from flange 26 by a spring 31 acting on the other arm. A bell crank lever 32 is engaged by a pin 33 on the presser lifter lever 34 which the latter is actuated to raise the presser foot, whereby lever 27 is rocked to engage fork 29 with flange 26 for releasing the spring pressure from the discs 20.
