Abstract

868,868. Jet-propulsion nozzles. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Jan. 7, 1960 [Jan. 15, 1959], No. 1576/59. Class 110 (3). A jet-propulsion nozzle comprising a fixed nozzle portion, a plurality of arcuate longitudinally tapering nozzle segments of flexible sheet material pivotally mounted within and closely contacting and conforming to the shape of the fixed nozzle portion and means to pivot the segments to vary the outlet area of the nozzle, has each segment mounted so that a degree of free radial movement relative to the pivoting axis is permitted in order to allow the segments to be held by the pressure of the jet gases in sealing contact with the fixed nozzle portion or means carried thereby. The jet pipe 10 is provided at its outlet end with an adjustable area discharge nozzle comprising a fixed nozzle portion 11 including an end ring 12, and a pair of longitudinally tapering adjustable nozzle segments 13 mounted within the portion 11. Each segment is mounted at each side on a pivot-pin 14 itself mounted in the portion 11. The portion 11 has an enlarged diameter portion 15 formed at its down-stream end with a lip 16 which closely conforms to the shape of and forms a seal with the adjacent surfaces of the nozzle segments 13. Each segment is provided with a pair of diametrically-spaced elongated slots 17 which engage the pivot-pins 14 to allow each segment 13 a degree of free radial movement relative to the pivot axis. The arrangement is such that the jet gases force the segments 13 radially outwards into contact with the lip 16. To assist the sealing, the nozzle segments are formed of thin flexible sheet metal whose flexibility and lightness is increased by holes 18 arranged inwardly of the seal between the lip 16 and the segments 13. The segments 13 are moved by rams 19. In a modification, the rams are disposed transversely of the fixed nozzle portion. The segments may be operated by screw-thread arrangements operated by an air motor if it is desired to place the nozzle in a number of positions between the maximum and minimum area positions.
