Abstract
868,862. Nuclear fusion reactors; discharge apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 26, 1959 [July 31, 1958], No. 24772/58. Classes 39(1) and 39(4). A tubular metal enclosure for an electrical discharge device is formed of a series of tubes connected mechanically end to end, the tubes being separated electrically by gaps extending annularly about the axis of the tubes, the ends of the tubes adjacent the gaps overlapping in a direction along the axis and forming with interposed electrical insulation a vacuum seal around the outsides of the gaps, and electrical insulation adjacent the inner face of the enclosure sealing the gaps against the entry of arc spots. Fig. 3 shows how a pair of adjacent sections can be connected. The wall 3 of the upper section has a longitudinal extension 5 and the wall 4 of the lower section has an extension 6, the extensions 5 and 6 overlapping to form a longitudinally extending gap. Flanges 8, 9 of the two sections are clamped together by a clamping ring 10 with interposed insulation 12, which may be a porcelain ring, with vacuum sealing rings in the faces of the flanges which are pressed against the ring 12. An insulating ring 13 is provided at the inner end of the gap to prevent arc spots entering the gap. The enclosure may be toroidal and form a thermonuclear apparatus.
