868,756. Digital electric calculatingappar-atus. BELL PUNCH CO. Ltd. Sept. 2, 1957 [Sept. 6, 1956; Nov. 22, 1956; July 3, 1957], Nos. 27563/57, 27564/57 and 27565/57. Divided out of 868,753. Class 106 (1). A calculating machine which is basically that described in Specification 868,753, is provided additionally with means for effecting multiplication by a one-digit multiplier. Depression of a " multiplication " key closes contacts L 4 <SP>10</SP>, L 5 <SP>10</SP> and L 1 <SP>10</SP>, L 3 <SP>10</SP> to connect the lower contact of a pair of contacts G-G to the driving electrode L<SP>11</SP> and to close the output circuit of a tube L, and moves a member (not shown) to ensure that the machine motor is not started when the multiplicand keys are actuated, the member being disengaged on actuation of a multiplier digit key. A single order of multiplier digit keys is provided, and on actuation of a key thereof, the discharge in the counting tube L is caused to pass to a cathode corresponding to the nines complement of the digit of the depressed key. The required multiplicand keys are depressed and retained depressed manually or automatically. When the motor-driven brush F bridges the contacts E-E, the valve T 1 is rendered conductive and the valve T 2 is rendered non-conductive, and on completion of each accumulation cycle which adds the multiplicand once on to the accumulator, a circuit completed between the contacts G-G causes the tube L to step only one digit, further accumulation cycles taking place until the discharge in the tube L reaches the " 9 " electrode to produce an output which resets the trigger pair T 1 , T 2 , the depressed multiplier keys then being manually or automatically released. To effect multiplication by a multi-digit multiplier, the single-digit operation is repeated with appropriate denominational shifts of the multiplicand digits.
