Abstract
868,684. Drilling by electro erosion. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. May 20, 1959 [May 23, 1958], No. 16638/58. Class 83 (4). Holes are drilled in a workpiece 14 by electro erosion using a hollow electrode 13 fed with pulsed direct current and through which is supplied an electrolyte under pressure. The current is supplied by a step-down transformer 24 through a bridge rectifier 26. Electrode 13 consists of a fine copper tube clamped in a holder 12, Fig. 2 (not shown), and through which the electrolyte supplied through pipe 27 is forced under pressure to the spark gap. The electrolyte forms an insulated coating on the bore to prevent side sparking. Workpiece 14 which may be a turbine blade is mounted in a bracket 15 which is lowered automatically by a motor to maintain the required spark gap. A depth indicator scale 20, 21 is provided. An air motor 35 may be used for rotating the blade especially when a helical electrode is used to provide a helical bore which follows the twist of the blade. The electrode may be of elliptical or elongated cross-section.
