Abstract
798,609. Cutting by spark or arc erosion. SPARCATRON, Ltd. Dec. 20, 1955 [Dec. 14, 1953], No. 34754/53. Class 83 (4). A method of cutting a screw-thread or helical groove in a workpiece 4 of electrically conductive material by electric spark and/or arc discharges, comprises employing an inclined cutter 20 arranged to rotate in consonance with the workpiece and formed on its periphery with parallel annular grooves 25 and interposed continuous or discontinuous ribs 26. For machining a screw-thread on a bar workpiece 4, the latter is mounted in chuck 3 rotated through gearing 8, 9 by an electric motor 10, and connected at 28 to a source of electric current which may be interrupted direct current or unidirectional current pulses of predetermined period and waveform or time-spaced discharges from a capacitance. The disc-like cutter electrode 20 which is connected by a brush 27 to the other side of the electric supply, is mounted on a shaft 23 driven by means of a belt 22. The shaft 23 is mounted in a carriage 19 which is adapted to be traversed along the bed 1 of the machine by a lead screw 15 driven through gearing 16, 17 by the electric motor 10. During operation the work zone is bathed with electrolyte or dielectric fluid. For producing internal threads a cutter electrode of less diameter than the hole is used. The invention is of particular use with workpieces of hard metal such as metal carbides, tool steels and stainless steels. Specifications 637,872, 780,121 and 780,242 are referred to.
