868,610. Pulse modulation systems; measuring sound intensity. BYFORD LABS. Inc. Nov. 29, 1958, No. 38570/58. Classes 40(5) and 40(7) A magnetostrictive line 16 is connected between two absorbing masses 17 and 18, and a pulse generator 10 feeds a winding 11 transmitting a pulse to a receiving winding 20 feeding the transmission circuit 12, and a sync pulse directly to the latter through line 13. Modulation signals move the line 16 longitudinally through winding 20 by means of a magnetic core 26, coil 25 and connecting rod 23 to produce a time modulated pulse output to circuit 12. There may be two windings 20 and independent means for moving opposite ends of the magnetostrictive line through the two windings 20. An absorbing block 18 may be dispensed with by immersing an end of the line in a damping fluid. The system may transmit the instantaneous voltage of a sound produced signal. The transducer moving the line may be piezoelectric, electrostatic, magnetostrictive or electromagnetic temperature or pressure responsive mechanism. Specification 865,925 is referred to.
